King Charles will have a historic meeting with Pope Leo during a state visit to Vatian City next month, it has been reported. The King will reportedly spend around two days in Vatican City, which he had planned to visit during his and Queen Camilla‘s four day visit to Italy back in April but it got postponed due to Pope Francis declining health.
Now new reports have claimed the royal couple will make a short, two-day trip to the city-state within Rome to meet the new Holy See. It will reportedly be the King and Queen’s only foreign trip in the autumn.
Pope Leo XIV, real name Robert Prevost, became the new head of the Catholic Church in May, after Francis’s death on April 21.
Charles and Camilla did have a private audience with Francis back in April, just days before he passed away.
It comes as the King is still receiving treatment for his cancer, 19 months after his diagnosis was announced.
Royal sources claimed that the monarch is keen on carrying out full foreign tours, noting the two state visits he hosted this year, from France and, more recently, the US.
According to the Sun, a third state visit in Windsor is “due soon”.
Meanwhile, the King and Queen are expected to visit the US next April.
But it is understood that there has been no formal invitation yet.
This week, a White House official close to Mr Trump told The Telegraph: “It was a really fantastic trip.
“The British know how to do this perfectly. They set the bar high for their trip to see us.”
