After President Trump departed Windsor Castle on Thursday morning to travel to the Prime Minister’s country retreat of Chequers, a royal insider provided a rare insight into how the state visit really went.

Hailing Trump’s unprecedented second state visit as a success, a royal source said the President and First Lady showed how much they appreciated the “awesome spectacle” that comes hand in hand with an event of this scale.

Mr and Mrs Trump had been “very easy to deal with” throughout their stay at Windsor, the source added. “It was very pleasing to see the way the state visit has been warmly received both by the guests and the media on both sides of the Atlantic,” they said. “It’s a clear sign of soft power and diplomacy.”

The source added: “The visiting party was very easy to deal with and very appreciative of the hospitality. All elements of the pomp and pageantry created an awesome spectacle. You can tell from the expression of the principals how much they appreciated it.”

The insider’s comments come after the President departed from Windsor Castle this morning to continue his state visit with Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.

As he bid a fond farewell to King Charles, he made his feelings clear to members of the waiting media before climbing into his car.

Referring to the King, he was heard to say: “He’s a great gentleman and a great King.”

Trump’s departure from Windsor Castle this morning comes after the success of the state banquet held in St George’s Hall last night.

During his speech, Trump spoke of his relationship with Prince William. He said: “His Majesty has also raised a remarkable son in His Royal Highness, the Prince of Wales. Really amazing. I’ve gotten to know you and you will have unbelievable success in the future.”

The President then turned his attention to the Princess of Wales and said: “Melania and I are delighted to visit again with Prince William and to see Her Royal Highness Princess Catherine, so radiant and so healthy, so beautiful. It’s really a great honour, thank you.”
